Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Manchester has been matching area children to caring volunteer mentors since 1966. We are pleased to be a full affiliate of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, which celebrated its 100th Anniversary in 2004.
A Big Brother or Big Sister provides guidance, friendship, encouragement and support which helps a child grow into a responsible and productive part of the community. Our services are provided free-of-charge.
Studies have shown that children matched to an adult mentor are more likely to finish school and avoid involvement with drugs or alcohol. Little Brothers and Sisters are less likely to get in trouble with the law or to become pregnant at an early age. They are also more likely than their peers to trust their parents or other adults in their lives.
Having a role model helps children learn new skills and develop a sense of being valued as an individual. As a result, their self-confidence and self-esteem increase dramatically. But it is not just the Littles who benefit – Bigs often say they get back far more than they give!
